유튜브에 뜬 ‘백세인생’ 부른 뉴욕 동포 건축가
“어머니가 천국에 갈 때까지, 가신 후에도 계속 이 노래를 부를 것입니다”

뉴욕에 거주하는 동포 건축사가 유투브에 올린 <백세인생>이 화제가 되어 1일 현재 110만 조회수를 기록하고 있다. 특히 그는 한국에서 유행되고 있는 백세인생을 영어로 번역하여 유투브에 올린 게 인기를 모으고 있다.
유투브 동영상에서 그는 기타를 키며 ‘백세인생’ 가사를 영어로 번안하여 부르고 있어 미국인들이 이해하고 들어 더욱 인기를 모으고 있다. 가사 내용 자체가 코믹하면서도 인생철학을 담고 있어 계속 화제가 되고 있다.
화제의 주인공은 뉴욕 건축사인 이해진(He Gin Lee, R.A., A.I.A.)씨로 한국에서 태어나 미국에 왔는데 고향에서 부모님들이 열심히 피와 땀을 흘려 뉴욕에서 건축을 공부할 수 있도록 헌신해 주었음을 잊지 못해 이 노래를 불렀다고 했다.
그는 뉴욕의 미국 건축사로서, 2003년도와 2004년도에 최우수 건축사 상을 뉴욕에서 받았다. 또한 2013년에 뉴욕 최초의 한국계 미국인 시장 후보로 선거에 출마하기도 했다.
그는 이 노래를 늙어 가시는 어머님을 위해서 이 노래를 불렀으나 모든 노인 분들이 행복과 미래에 대한 희망을 제 노래로부터 갖게 해주고 싶어 불렀다고 한다.
유투브에서 그는 영어로 자신을 아래와 같이 소개했는데 그 내용이 부모 사랑이 절절해 심금을 울리고 있다. 아래와 같이 한글과 영문을 소개한다.
<이 노래는 제 부모님께 헌정 된 노래입니다. 자식들을 위해 모든 것을 바쳐주신 아버지 어머님. 벽돌공인 아버지보다 잘된 건축사를 만들기 위해 눈비바람과 싸우신 아버지와 어머님. 제가 건축사 면허를 부모님들 덕분에 받았다고 생각합니다. 구 남매가 있던 어려운 집안이었습니다. 제 아버지는 벽돌공으로 일했고, 여름에는 맹렬한 햇볕 아래서 일하면서 땀을 흘리며 건강이 위태로워져도 피하지 않았습니다.
자식 미국 유학을 보내어 건축사가 되기도 전에 세상을 떠나신 아버님과의 슬픔이 잊혀지기 전에, 또 어머님의 허약한 건강이 자식들의 가슴을 아프게 해 이 노래를 하고 있습니다. 그들의 헌신과 고통 덕분에 제가 미국 건축사가 되고 뉴욕 시장 후보가 될 수 있었다고 생각합니다.
부모님들의 도움이 없었다면 아무 것도 할 수 없었겠죠. 아메리칸 드림의 꿈을 꾸게 해주신 부모님들, 요즘 저는 어머니의 감사를 조금씩이나마 돌려주려고 노력합니다. 매 주마다 어머니를 마사지 스파에 모셔 갑니다. 휠체어에 앉아 있으면 발이 붓기 때문이죠. 저는 어머니와 함께 운전할 때 노래를 같이 부릅니다. 너무 행복해 하시고 정열적으로 노래를 부르십니다. 그게 저에게는 어머니의 희망과 성공을 일깨우는 것이고, 그녀의 긴 고통을 위로해 드리기 위해서입니다.
오래도록 건강한 삶을 원하는 노인뿐만 아니라, 모든 사람에게 이 노래를 들려주고 싶습니다. 저는 좋은 가수는 아니지만 가사가 세계의 노인들에게 힘과 용기를 주는 노래라고 생각됩니다. 이 노래로 젊은이와 전 세계 어린이들이 그들의 부모님의 노력을 존경하게 되기를 원하고, 우리들의 부모님들 헌신이 없이는 우리가 성공하기 힘들었다고 믿습니다.

This song is dedicated to my parents.
They have provided me with everything we need and care for. They allowed me to finish my study and get the architect’s license, the Architect of the Year in New York twice, and the ballot for NYC mayor candidate in 2013.
I was born in a struggling family of nine. My father worked as a bricklayer in construction sites. In summer, he worked under the scorching sun, sweating and risking injuries to support us. In winter, he battled against bone-chilling winds, because the warmth of his love was stronger than any snowstorms.
My mother worked in a street market. She showed up regardless of storms, to support us. Father has passed away; mother is alive and living with me. I was able to graduate college because they wanted me to succeed. Not just the tuition cost, but more importantly, their dedication and trust gave me a strength to be a registered architect.
If it weren’t for them, none of this could have happened – the True American Dream.
Nowadays, I try to pay them back for their gratitude and determination.
Every week I bring her to massage spas, because she sits in a wheelchair and her feet get swollen.
When I drive with her, we sing this song together. She gets so happy and energetic singing this. It’s like a reminder of hope and success, that her young life wasn’t wasted away for me.
So, I wanted to share this song for everyone. Not just old people wishing for a healthy life, because the lyrics really represent every child’s wishes and hopes. While I am not a great singer, the lyrics strike me as very important for all parents’ life, and the elderly people of the world.
I want young adults and children around the world to respect and see their parents’ efforts for what they are – something no other person is willing to do for a stranger.
I want them to see myself as the successful architect that they wanted me to be. To help elderly people of the world through architecture. I want elderly people around the world to have hope and strength for the future – not just wishing for a healthy life, but also express how much better it is to be proud of their family and the future events.
That’s why I pray for her to live and be healthy as long as possible. And I will be singing this, more and more, even after she goes to heaven.
